a girlfriend of mine is launching a lingerie line next month, which i'm naturally very excited about. she's fun and stylish, and i think she could pull off making high-quality stuff that's fun and sexy without being trashy.
side note: i know, sometimes trashy is the effect you want! personally though, i have a hard time finding stuff that's well made, with nice fabric, without looking too old or boring, or younger stuff without having cheap fabric or a trashy vibe. and nice undergarments is one thing i'm willing to splurge on once and a while, so i'm not just shopping in the 3 pairs for $10 bin.
her line so far is fairly small, with plans for expansion in the spring. so far she's been testing out designs on her friends (it's pretty nice to have her show up with a pair of cute underwear in her purse for you!). we were talking on the phone the other night, and the thong subject came up. here's my thoughts:

i personally find a lot of thongs do that bum elongating thing (i've complained about it with no-back-pocket jeans before; i have a longer waist to hip ratio), generally the ones that have a high back with little fabric. the ones that have more fabric coming down from the waist, creating a heart shape, tend to shorten and booti-fy my bum. i find that in the latter style, if there's lacy details around the edges, in the back, it creates a heightened 3-d effect (think: fabric goes from semi-transparent to solid around the tops of the cheeks).
similarly, full-bum underwear need to be lower-cut for me, breaking up the space back there.

now: i am going to be working for her at her launch party, and i'd like to be extremely well-informed. i'd love to be able to chat up the ladies and help them find a style that makes them feel hottest. i, of course, know the most about my own body type. what about if you feel your bum is too big? what effect would a wider band all around have on the hips, vs. underwear that come to a skinny strap at the hips?
what about slips and negligees? i've heard spaghetti straps can widen shoulders (is this true?). a v shape would elongate the neck and body more than a rounded one, right?

oh, and a big, fat complaint here: what's with the lacy half-bum thongs you can buy with a seam right up the centre in the front? there is nothing that irritates me more. camel toe is almost unavoidable! the point of a thong is back wedgie, not front wedgie. gross!
what's worse, is they only seem to get this effect after a few washes. i guess the stretch lace softens up and the seam stays harder (and therefore, taut-er).

i guess it's easier to make cheap underwear that way, but jeez! it makes me nuts. i would like to find the guy in charge at these places (come on, it must be a guy!) and force him into a pair of underwear that forces his bits into weird, uncomfortable places! and i would make them a polyester spandex blend! muah ha ha ha...

If you're self concious about your neck, try to get a neckline that is longer than it is wide. (A sharp V is perfect)

Spaghetti straps do widen shoulders, but a thicker strap is just fine.

If you're self concious about your arms, don't wear sleeveless or cap sleeve- either wear something that shows your arms and shoulder area (I suck at describing this) or wear something with sleeves.

I often find when I try on negligees that the straps are too long. Don't know if this is a boob size issue (if I were bigger the decolletage would be filled with something, instead they end up on show...)

Cap sleeves also balance wide hips if you aren't already concious about your arms. Three-quarter length sleeves hide arms and draw attention to your waist visually as that is where they stop.

Halter necks again widen shoulders but work best with straight shoulders.

Any top designed for larger cup sizes would need some support if it isn't just sleep wear (I like support and I am not a big girl)

I have this on good authority from a guy friend- loose comfy slips like babydolls are *muy* sexier than a corset. This is disappointing because I am very much of the corset and thigh-highs fanclub. But the reason he gave was that a corset is just not as sexy because it looks so uncomfortable. It makes sense, actually.

I don't know about what works, as I'm not a thong kinda girl. In fact, most of my thongs pinch at my hips, which I hate. Remind me to throw them away. So pinchage is a BIG no-no. But it's the exact opposite for me. I need something that makes my butt look more... round? Yeah. I have a butt, more than most asian girls. But it's not a nice, lush, round, high butt that some black girls are lucky enough to have. So something that... arches up is better.

I actually prefer boyshorts most/more. I like a little low-riding pair of boyshorts that i have that have lace trim. so it makes my butt look nice and round, as opposed to, erm. flat.

I have found those to be the most sexy and the most flattering for a LOT of body types...they round you out nicely where needed, hugg curves without pinching. They are my faves and I SWEAR by them.

nothing worse than something that gives you a flat bum, or flat boobs!
i once had to wear a white spandex halter dress for this thing (i won't get into details, but it was a favour), and it gave me the worst flap-jack tits you've ever seen. i couldn't wear a bra with it. ugh, it was terrible.

=/ Ugh, I'm sorry. Support is important! I'm bigger up top myself, so yeah. Support is muy important. I think muy is my new favorite word.

I think it'd be cool if your friend did sexy, comfy little low-riding panties, too. My guy friends echo that it's very sexy. Of course, both of them have schoolgirl fetishes...

Yeah, all the boys I've talked to on this issue are all "Yeh verily! Sexy 'boy pants' are the hotness!" But yeah...schoolgirl fetishes all the way.

But speaking of those, you know those lace butt tangas? I don't think I've ever seen those look unattractive on anyone.

*grins* Yup. And those would be flattering. I think it's the same concept- the way they're cut over your butt is... flattering.

On October 27th, 2006 10:22 pm (UTC), mahakali replied:
Yeah, and because they are all stretchy lace with no "waistband" (which is the bane of my hippy existance, those damn waistbands) they hug curves without pinching. That's the key, I think. If you've got an extra ounce on you, those waistbands on most panties will cut into you.

boys with their schoolgirl fetishes.... it's funny how you can go out and spend serious time and cash finding sexy underwear, but they're just as happy with the white cotton panties. =)

Ahoyhoy!

In my class, we're discussing swimwear and...

Into what's flattering, boyshorts are less visually appealing, so the higher the cut of the legholes the more visually appealing. You see, whe wearing swimsuit/lingerie, around the hip is the thickest part of the body below the waist, so if you break up that space, or decrease fabric (by making a higher cut, it tends to look much more flattering.

Boy shorts can be very forgiving though, I own a pair of lace boy short underwear, and they're very comfortable, and very .......I feel good in them, and still covered up yet sexy.

Again, black and dark, deep tones are the most flattering, darker tones for lighter skin and vice versa etc etc

I think boyshorts are really attractive in almost any situation, unless they're really high rise. I think if you raised the leghole it'd only put more emphasis on the hips, wouldn't it?

On October 26th, 2006 04:47 pm (UTC), hatstodisappear replied:
i would think, intuitively, that a high leg would elongate legs, while widening hips. i guess just because boyshorts are a much more 'boyish' look. but i could be wrong on this...
On October 26th, 2006 05:55 pm (UTC), ninja_jen replied:
But the lack of fabric around the widest part of your hip only serves to create a more slimming and flattering illusion, while the boyshorts are more "modest". they will highlight the widest part of the hip because there is fabric there

They are good for lengthening the legs, but high legs do make the gusset far too small for some though, and they ride up too.

I think a lot depends on what your top half looks like too.

I've never known a guy to call them sexy before, either.
If your friend ever does a line of "not really meant to be seen" underwear, then she should go with some boyshorts too!

Heh, my guy friends say that cute little white panties (think the kind they have those 'sexy' schoolgirls wear) and lacy boyshorts are muy hotter than thongs. I think it's the comfort thing again. They're all like, "... It looks so *uncomfortable*."

And hey, anything that approves of something not a thong or a g-string? Is fiiiiiiiiine by me.

I personally would never wear a thong. Quite apart from the permanent wedgie feeling that I can't get used to (though I know some people love them) every time one comes with a bra of mine I try it for looks and just end up thinking it looks swamped by my hips and bum. I would feel (and weirdly look) less naked, naked. I can see why they are popular though.

I also don't like high cut legs either because, well they too don't feel like they cover enough and they come up too high on the waist on me, peeking out of my jeans, although visually I have no issue with them.

In underwear I usually go for "midis" the standard low waist schoolgirl knickers, my choice not his (although he approves). Very flattering but undercatered for I think I have about 50 plain and one pretty one in my wardrobe and it took some finding.

Not shorts (disappointingly they look so cute) because they make my thighs look huge, they look great on my mate who is a much straighter body type than mine. Although French knickers, with the slit up the side, work because they don't cling.

and by high cut legs do we mean full bum french cut? ooooh i look horrible in those. my mom bought me some from victoria secret a couple years ago, and i still have them because i never seem to have enough underwear (i dont do laundary much, you see). i have largeish thighs and i think the high cut legs draws attention to the fronts of my thighs and makes them look like theyre coming further forward than they should be. although, it probably is true that they minimize hips. but as a participant and fan of burlesque, i dont mind curvy hips; big hips look old school hot to me.

i think that for the indent-on-the-sides issue, a thicker and softer band around the top does the trick. also just getting underwear that fits right. i don't actually own any of these, but i the perfect pair of underwear would be a separate, hip-bone-high waistband that was two inches thick and made of smooth lace, with a separate crotch part, thong in the back. i would buy a hundred of those.

on the sexiness subject, i asked my boyfriend the other day what he thinks of thongs (i wear them about half the time.) and he said that theyre awesome because "it means that youre almost there." i thought that was really funny. however, thats not really the kind of sexy that i strive to be. he seems to pay more attention to my ass when im wearing lacy boy shorts, so i think that thongs are a hot concept, but in reality a bit of coverage can go a long way.

yeah, along his line of reasoning, micro-minis would be the only way to go for a skirt. but i too prefer to go for the less obvious sexy.
i just asked my boyfriend what his favorite kind of underwear on a girl are, and i've given up. apparently once you're in your underwear, it's not about the underwear. =) i was kind of shocked that he couldn't even seem to remember some of the hot numbers i have.

I go for comfort all the way. The man kind of likes thongs, but he's not the one wearing them, and he doesn't mind much either way; as you said, as long as it's not downright hideous, the concept of wearing nothing but underwear is enough on it's own.

I like low-rise with full coverage, but even huge maxi type things tend to ride up on me - and if it stands between having the wedgie feeling of a thong and an actual granny panty wedgie, I'll pick the thong as the lesser of two evils. Agree with midnightoaks, though; they look swamped on me too, and the Holy Grail of underwear for me would be pretty, comfy boyshorts that didn't ride up.
